Chrysler recalls 1.2 million vehicles for inspection

Tennessee Jeep lovers may be interested to learn that Chrysler, after initially stating that it would not comply with a recall of several models of its vehicles, has changed its mind and will recall the vehicles for inspection. Among the potentially dangerous products that are being recalled are 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Jeep Libertys, a total of approximately 2.7 million vehicles.

According to the report, Chrysler would have faced high-profile public hearings that would have involved testimony from automotive safety estimates and from the family members of victims who perished in fires caused by the defective vehicles. Even if officials agreed that a recall was not needed, Chrysler's reputation would still have been put on the line.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which had asked for the recall, reported that it was pleased with Chrysler's decision. According to its records, at least 51 deaths have resulted in fires caused by accidents.

Chrysler will only recall about 1.2 million of the potentially risky vehicles. The vehicles will have a factory trailer hitch attached to the cars to add protection to the plastic gas tank in the event of a slow-speed, rear-end collision. Vehicles that have a non-Chrysler hitch will have the item replaced by a factory trailer hitch.

When retailers, manufacturers and service providers sell a product, they are responsible to ensure the safety of that product. If an individual becomes injured due to a product defect or an improper design, they may be entitled to receive compensation. An experienced Tennessee attorney may be able to help clients obtain this compensation by preparing the lawsuit and representing them in court. The attorney may also ensure fair compensation if the company attempts to settle.
