Chrysler set to recall over 600,000 SUVs

Just two days after refusing a government request to recall 2.7 million older-model Jeeps, Chrysler announced it will be recalling 630,000 Jeeps worldwide through two separate recalls. The first recall will affect 409,000 Jeep Patriot and Compass small SUVs from the 2010 and 2012 model years while the second recall is for 221,000 Jeep Wranglers from the 2012 and 2013 model years.

The Jeep Wrangler recall is to fix transmission fluid leaks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while the Patriots and Compasses potentially have a software error that could cause late deployment of the side air bags and seat-belt tightening mechanisms. Dealers will fix the software ware issue for free beginning in July, which should help correct the defective products.

The timing of these latest recalls could not be any worse for Chrysler. A recent plea from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 2.7 million Jeeps because the placement of the gas tank increases the risk of fire during rear end crashes went unfulfilled and raised speculation about the safety of Chrysler's Jeep products. With so much speculation going on about the safety of Chrysler vehicles, the car manufacturer could be facing some serious liability issues.

Should someone get hurt because of the side air bag, seat-belt mechanism and transmission fluid leak issues, Chrysler could face some hefty lawsuits. Car manufacturers have a duty to produce safe vehicles that meet certain regulatory standards. When vehicles do not adhere to those standards, the car manufacturer could be held liable for any damage that is caused by an accident that was the direct result of a faulty vehicle. A personal injury lawyer may be able to assist someone who was injured as a result of a defective product seek compensation.
