Recall of certain GM vehicles started after collisions, deaths

Tennessee drivers should be aware of a recall recently announced by General Motors. The recall involves a potentially fatal flaw in over 700,000 vehicles on the road.

In certain GM models, specifically the 2005-07 models of Chevy Cobalt and the 2007 Pontiac G5, the ignition switch is prone to shutting down in certain situations. This can happen when the vehicle is jarred in some way. Even a heavy set of keys can manage to pull the ignition switch out of alignment. This could result in the car shutting down completely, the shutting off of airbags or the disabling of the steering assistance. The issue can even cause the brake to be shut off.

So far, reports indicate that 22 collisions have resulted from this ignition issue. In these accidents, six people have been killed. The ignition switch problem affects 778,562 vehicles. Due to the fact that the two models have been discontinued, and years have passed since their original sale, many of the vehicles are no longer in the hands of their original owners. One expert points out that this increases the difficulty for GM to contact those who now own the cars. She believes that the repercussions for GM from the recall could last for a long while.

Motor vehicle accidents that cause injury or death to those involved can be tragic when the fault lies with a manufacturer. When the negligence of the vehicle manufacturer is involved, and the accident could have been averted, that manufacturer may be liable for the consequences of the crash. An attorney who has experience in car accident injury cases may be helpful in bringing a lawsuit against the car manufacturer. This can result in compensation for personal injury, lost wages and pain and suffering damages.
