Trucker found to be at-fault in Tennessee accident

A semi-truck driver who caused a multi-vehicle accident was found guilty of misdemeanor charges. Two passengers of a vehicle involved in the accident died from their injuries.

The accident happened in June of 2013 in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 at the South Church Street exit. Traffic had slowed because of a fender-bender, and there was an increase in traffic volume because of the Bonnaroo music festival. According to a state trooper who responded to the accident scene, when he arrived, he found an overturned semi-truck and several other damaged vehicles. Two young people who had driven down from Indiana to attend Bonnaroo, a 25-year-old woman and her 28-year-old boyfriend, died as a result of injuries suffered in the truck accident.

Law enforcement officials indicated that the semi-truck driver initially stated that he looked away from the road briefly to pick up something he had dropped. Later, he claimed that a car pulled in front of him, and he didn't have enough time to stop. Blood testing performed at the time of the accident indicated that intoxication was not a factor in the collision. Because a grand jury did not recommend that he face criminal charges, the truck driver was found guilty of misdemeanors that will result in the loss of his driving privileges for a year and cost him $500.

When the negligent actions of others lead to the death of a family member, grieving families are often unsure of the steps involved in seeking justice for their loved ones. Attorneys may be able to educate clients about the legal remedies available to them and help them to pursue compensation from the responsible parties.
