Woman dies in Tennessee after collision with church bus

One death and multiple injuries were reported in Knoxville following an accident involving a church bus. The July 17 incident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on North Broadway Street, according to police.

A 54-year-old woman was reportedly driving a Kia Rio on North Broadway Street when her car was struck by a church bus at the Oglewood Avenue intersection. Officers stated that the bus also struck a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. After striking the two vehicles, the bus came to a stop in a nearby business parking lot, authorities reported. Investigators said that the bus had run a red light at the intersection just prior to the wreck.

Officials pronounced the 54-year-old woman in the Kia dead at the scene. The two occupants of the pickup truck, including its 16-year-old driver, suffered injuries in the wreck and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Reportedly, 18 individuals were traveling on the church bus at the time of the accident, including 11 teenagers. Five of them reported suffering injuries, and emergency personnel transported those five to a hospital.

According to authorities, the church bus may have been experiencing a mechanical problem when it ran the red light. Knoxville police indicated that the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

If further investigation corroborates the theory that a mechanical malfunction was a major factor contributing to the fatal accident, then the people who suffered damages as a result of the incident might be entitled to financial compensation via civil action. These people include not just the injured individuals but also certain family members of the woman who died.

For example, people injured in accidents caused by faulty auto parts or poorly maintained vehicles may retain a personal injury lawyer and file suit against the at-fault party. In this way, victims may seek restitution for the economic damages they suffered in connection with their accident-related injuries.
