Vaginal implant manufacturer to pay $21 million in settlement

Eastern Tennessee residents may be interested to know that C.R. Bard Inc. has agreed to a $21 million settlement stemming from their defective vaginal-mesh implants. The implants are meant to help fortify the pelvic muscle by being sewn to the vaginal wall, which can then better support internal organs. According to lawsuits, these implants begin to disintegrate after being inserted.

Patients who received the implants have complained of painful sexual intercourse and vaginal tissue and organ damage. In 2010, the FDA ordered Bard and other vaginal implant manufacturers to study the safety of the devices. Other implant makers have pulled some lines of their vaginal implants from the market.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in July, Bard is facing over 12,000 lawsuits over the defective implants. The company has settle 500 of these lawsuits, each claim as averaged about $43,000. Like other vaginal implant manufactures, such as the Dublin, Ireland, based company Endo International Plc, which spent $1.3 billion to settle its 30,000 vaginal implant lawsuits, Bard is facing heavy financial costs over this product failure.

In a case where defective products cause injury or harm, the victim may want to contact a lawyer. An attorney could help inform their client of options with regard to gaining compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages due to the defective product. If the company that produced the product can be held liable, then a civil case may be built against them. A personal injury lawyer could also represent the injured plaintiff during settlement negotiations if the company decides to settle out of court.
