Avoiding Tennessee accidents with technology

Motorists in Tennessee may be unaware of the available technological advances that assist drivers with decreasing their reaction times, thus reducing their risk of involvement in motor vehicle collisions. Many of these are currently available as options people can choose to add when they are purchasing a new vehicle, but the government does not currently mandate that manufacturers include them as standard features.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demonstrated that inclusion of accident avoidance technologies on every new car would result in a 40 percent reduction of certain types of accidents for passenger vehicles and a 70 percent reduction for SUVs. The analysis was done by looking at rear-end collisions, run-off accidents and lane change incidents, the largest categories of accidents caused by driver inattention.

A similar study was completed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration concerning the inclusion of the same technologies on the nation's fleet of commercial trucks. The study indicated that such technologies would have reduced the number of rear-end crashes by between 8.597 and 18,013 for truck-involved rear-end crashes occurring between 2001 and 2005.

Truck accidents are especially problematic due to the sheer size and weight of commercial vehicles. When a car occupant is involved in a truck accident as a result of the driver's negligence, the victim is more likely to suffer serious personal injury or even death than for other types of motor vehicle collisions. Mandating accident avoidance technologies on all commercial vehicles at a minimum could potentially save many people from serious injuries each year. Until and unless that occurs, people who are injured may have recourse through filing a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent truck driver as well as the driver's employer.
