Incidence of drowsy driving alarming

Tennessee residents may understand that driving while tired is dangerous, but they may not know exactly how frequently people do it. A 2015 survey demonstrates that it is a pervasive problem and one that needs to be addressed.

According to the survey conducted by AAA, 43 percent of all drivers admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel at least one time in their lives. Overall, 31.5 percent of the respondents reported having driven in the past month while having difficulty staying awake. Nearly 40 percent of the drivers between the ages of 19 and 24 reported having done the same in the previous month.

Studies completed by other agencies are equally alarming. The National Transportation Safety Board has found that 39.5 percent of the major highway investigations that it conducted between 2001 and 2012 had drowsy driving as a contributing factor. A 2010 AAA study found that 16.5 percent of accidents in which people were killed were caused by fatigued drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 people are killed in the U.S. every year because of drowsy driving.

When drowsy drivers cause car collisions, people who are injured may be left to deal with significant losses that often include high medical expenses and, in many cases, a loss of wages due to an inability to return to work during what is often a lengthy recovery period. Those who find themselves in these situations may want to discuss their options with a personal injury attorney. Legal counsel may suggest the filing of a lawsuit against the negligent motorist seeking appropriate financial damages.
