Tennessee man killed in suspected drunk-driving accident

On August 5, a 59-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in a Wilson County accident, according to authorities. Police suspect that a 20-year-old male driver involved in the crash was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time. The fatal accident occurred around 9 p.m. at the intersection of Stewarts Ferry Pike and Mt. Juliet Road in Rural Hill.

The 59-year-old man, a doctor, was heading south on Mt. Juliet Road when he entered the intersection and was struck by the 20-year-old man, who had just run a red light on Stewarts Ferry Pike, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The 20-year-old driver's vehicle struck the driver's side of the 59-year-old man's car. As a result of the collision, both vehicles careened into a ditch alongside the roadway, reportedly. The doctor died as a result of the crash.

Authorities reported that the 20-year-old man subsequently exited his vehicle and stumbled around the accident scene. Investigators ordered a blood test after they allegedly found evidence that the man had used drugs and alcohol. The 20-year-old man is now facing charges of reckless endangerment, and further charges are reportedly pending. Moreover, law enforcement officials issued the man a citation for failing to yield to a traffic signal.

Despite the criminal charges accompanying this case, it might also give rise to civil action if the family of the deceased man were to retain a wrongful death attorney and file suit against the 20-year-old man. This might be an option because people who suffer damages as a result of a fatal accident may be entitled to financial compensation if they can prove to a civil court that another party's actionable behavior, such as drunk driving, caused the fatal incident.
